You’re Not Lazy, You’re Just Broke on Energy

Let me be brutally frank about this. If you constantly feel tired, dragging yourself through each day like you’re wading through mud, you’ve probably been given the wrong advice your entire life. Everyone tells you to sleep more, eat better, exercise, take vitamins. And sure, those things help. But they’re not the root cause.

The real reason you’re exhausted is that you’re treating your energy like it’s infinite. And you’re spending it on things that give you zero return.

I’ve been there. I used to wake up feeling like I’d already run a marathon. I’d go through the motions, barely functional, and crash by 3 PM. Then I’d beat myself up for being lazy. But here’s the thing: I wasn’t lazy. I was just making terrible energy investments.

Think about your energy like a bank account. You have a daily deposit of, say, 100 units. Most people spend 80 of those units on things like worrying about what their boss thinks, replaying awkward conversations in their head, scrolling through social media comparing their life to curated highlight reels, and stressing over stuff they can’t control. What’s left? 20 units. And that’s before you even start your actual work. No wonder you’re bankrupt by noon.

The people who seem to have boundless energy aren’t superheroes. They’re just better at not wasting their deposits. They know something you don’t: energy is not about how much sleep you got last night. It’s about how much of your brain space is being hijacked by things that don’t matter.

Here’s the hard truth. Your phone is not your friend. The news is not your friend. Drama at work is not your friend. Every time you pick up your phone to check what’s happening in the world, you’re spending your energy units on something that has zero impact on your life. You’re not more informed. You’re just more exhausted.

I’m not saying go live in a cave. I’m saying look at your life and ask: is this expense necessary? Will this worry improve my life? Will scrolling through LinkedIn make me more money or just make me feel inadequate?

If you’re tired all the time, stop looking for the perfect sleep schedule or the magic supplement. Start looking at where your attention goes. Because attention is energy. And if you don’t protect it, someone else will gladly take it and leave you with the bill.

You want to be energetic? Stop spending energy on things that don’t pay dividends. Wake up, and ask yourself: what can I do today that will actually move the needle? And then do that. Everything else is just noise.

And if you don’t have the energy to do even that, then you need to start smaller. Stop participating in conversations you hate. Stop trying to please people you don’t even respect. Stop checking your email first thing in the morning. Your future self will thank you for setting better boundaries today.

Here’s my very biased take: most of what you think is “fatigue” is just “misdirected effort.” You’re not tired. You’re over-invested in low-return activities. Cut the leaks, and you’ll be amazed how much energy you actually have.

You don’t need more hours in the day. You need fewer leaks in your bucket.
