Have you ever caught yourself wondering: AI writes my copy, debugs my code, even drafts my plans. Everything gets faster, cheaper, easier. But that quiet thought creeps in—am I still growing?
In 1968, animal behaviorist John B. Calhoun set up a little experiment that might give you pause. He put eight mice into a perfect world: unlimited food, no predators, no disease. He called it “Universe 25.”
For a while, the mice thrived. Population climbed to 2,200 by day 560. Then things started falling apart. Young males couldn’t find a social role—they became violent. Mothers attacked their own pups. A small group just sat there, grooming themselves, doing nothing.
The real killer wasn’t aggression. It was indifference. Mice would step over dead companions like they didn’t exist. Calhoun called this “the second death”—a social and spiritual collapse that came before physical death. And here’s the scary part: it was irreversible. Even when he restored space, the mice never snapped back.
His conclusion: a world without scarcity can destroy the very capacity to adapt. The mice didn’t starve—they died from having nothing to struggle against.
Sound familiar? AI is driving execution costs, information costs, and creative barriers all the way down to near zero. When everything becomes frictionless, do we risk slowly losing our own edge?
Here’s the good news: unlike those mice, we’re not locked inside a closed universe. We still have three cards to play.
First card: lateral thinking. AI converges. Give it a problem, it searches for the optimal solution. Humans diverge. We borrow ideas from completely unrelated fields. Origami inspired solar panel designs for satellites. Honeycomb patterns shaped modern architecture. This cross-pollination—making connections that don’t exist in the training data—is something AI still can’t touch.
Second card: exponential mindset. Our brains default to linear thinking. But reality often moves in exponential leaps. Next time you hear about a new technology, ask yourself: how often does this thing double? Then push forward three doubling cycles. If AI agents double in capability every 12 months, what will they look like in two years? That mental exercise rewires how you see change.
Third card: moonshot mindset. Before 1954, running a mile under 4 minutes was considered impossible—a biological limit. Roger Bannister ran 3:59.4. Within 46 days, someone else beat that record. Human physiology didn’t suddenly improve. What changed was the belief barrier. Aim for 10x improvement, not 10%. A 10% target keeps you tinkering inside the existing box. A 10x target forces you to tear down the box and start over.
Lateral thinking lets you walk paths no one else can see. Exponential mindset helps you spot the wave before it breaks. Moonshot mindset gives you the courage to ride it.
The right way to use AI isn’t to eliminate all friction. It’s to push yourself to the edge of “just a little bit hard.” Treat AI as your whetstone, not your crutch.
