Summer break is two months long. Give your kid a phone, and what happens? They scroll, tap, binge—videos, games, live streams. The algorithm feeds them, and they stop feeding their own curiosity. The problem isn’t the screen. It’s the tool.
I once asked a friend—someone who thinks deeply about how people learn—why he insists on giving his kids a computer instead of a phone. His answer stuck with me: The initiative is different.
A phone is a terminal. Content comes to you—thumb flicks, swipe endless, consume. A computer is a launchpad. Even if you watch the same video, on a computer you search, you choose. You open a browser, type a query, evaluate results. Every click is a decision. Over time, one path breeds passivity; the other breeds ownership.
This isn’t about gadgets. It’s about wiring. A kid raised on push notifications becomes reliant on the algorithm. A kid raised on search learns to act—on purpose.
So what can a kid actually do this summer that builds that active muscle? Three concrete things.
1. Record 50 consecutive days.
Write a diary, caption a photo, record a voice memo—doesn’t matter. The task is simple: observe yourself, every day, without judgment. Fifty days later, they’ll see a pattern they never noticed. Self-awareness is a superpower no summer camp can teach.
2. Teach a class to younger students.
A 9th grader can teach 7th graders how to survive middle school. A 7th grader can teach 5th graders about the coming transition. To teach, you must first understand—you organize ideas, anticipate confusion, choose your words. That’s deep learning. The confidence of standing in front of others, of being the one who knows, can’t be bought with practice exams.
3. Write a family memoir.
Interview grandparents, aunts, uncles. What were they like at your age? What’s their most unforgettable memory? This isn’t just writing practice. It’s a real connection. When a kid realizes they’re part of a long line of stories, they stop feeling alone. Belonging isn’t a lesson—it’s felt.
In the past, these tasks were too hard for many kids. "I don’t know how" was a wall. Now? That wall is gone. AI is here—to organize language, to sort research, to draft a slide deck. The only thing a kid needs to bring is a willingness to act: ask a question, give an instruction, iterate.
That’s the real skill for the future: turning a thought into a result using whatever tool is at hand.
Give your kid a computer this summer. Not because it’s a better screen. Because it’s a better launchpad for the person they’re becoming.
